Grades & Alloys

4140

4140 is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel used where high strength, toughness, and fatigue resistance are required, such as landing gear components, drive elements, and structural fittings. In pre-hardened conditions, 4140 becomes more challenging to machine, with higher cutting forces and heat. The Davenport Hybrid’s high-pressure coolant options help manage heat and chip evacuation in 4140, while CNC turning and threading functions allow Gates Albert to hold tight diametrical and positional tolerances in one fast, integrated cycle.

4130

4130 chrome-moly steel is widely used for aerospace tubing, fittings, and structural parts where weldability and high strength-to-weight ratio are critical. It machines more easily than some higher-alloy steels but still benefits from rigid fixturing and efficient chip control in high-volume production. Davenport multi-spindle screw machines deliver cost-effective throughput for 4130 parts with multiple turned, drilled, and threaded features in a single setup, while the Hybrid’s CNC controls add digital size control and fine adjustment capability to maintain repeatable quality over long runs.

4340

4340 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy steel known for ultra-high strength and toughness, often used in landing gear, rotor components, and highly stressed fasteners. In hardened conditions, 4340 can be demanding on tools and susceptible to chatter if the machine platform lacks rigidity. The Davenport Hybrid’s enhanced stiffness, preloaded angular contact spindle bearings, and CNC-managed cutting parameters enable stable, productive machining of 4340, while multi-spindle operation keeps cycle times competitive with rotary transfer and CNC alternatives.

1215 and 12L14

1215 and 12L14 are free-machining carbon steels engineered for excellent chip formation and tool life, making them ideal for high-volume production of pins, bushings, and fittings. Davenport mechanical multi-spindle machines are optimized for these materials, running aggressive feeds and speeds with conventional flood coolant to produce complex turned geometries at extremely low cost per piece.

1018

1018 cold-rolled steel offers higher toughness and better surface quality than many low-carbon steels, and it responds well to cold form threading and secondary operations. On both traditional Davenports and the Hybrid, Gates Albert can integrate turning, drilling, cross-working, and cutoff operations in a single cycle, delivering consistent mechanical properties and surface finishes on 1018 CRS components.
