Hardened Stainless Steel Application

Improve production efficiency and part quality

Machining hardened stainless steel components above 50 HRC presents significant challenges—especially in high-volume production environments. Tool wear, poor machinability, and cycle time inefficiencies often limit scalability.

Gates Albert leveraged advanced CNC multi-spindle machining technology from Davenport to overcome these barriers, achieving a nearly 80% increase in throughput while improving part quality and overall consistency.

The Challenge

A custom stainless steel alloy was selected to eliminate field failures, but introduced new manufacturing challenges. With hardness exceeding 50 HRC, the material caused excessive tool wear and inconsistent results on legacy equipment.

High production volumes further complicated the process. Traditional single-spindle lathes and Swiss machines could not meet cycle time or cost targets, making them unsuitable for scalable production.
